English 6 is here!
By Michael Stokrp. Posted from the Curriculum Department.
English 6 has just been added to the Novel library of courses to complete our middle school language arts curriculum. This newest course represents a solution for students struggling with sixth grade language arts skills or for those needing a way to demonstrate mastery in order to advance to the next grade. English 6 emphasizes simple but useful composition and language mechanics strategies along with multiple opportunities for modeling practical, real-world writing situations that will enable students to improve their written communication skills quickly.
In English 6, students will also receive an overview of key literary genres and their identifying characteristics. These lessons and accompanying assignments, which allow students to compose their own literary pieces, will lay the foundation for interpreting and appreciating literature in future courses.
Suggestions for various options of how to utilize English 6 appear in a Note to Teachers in the course table of contents. We recommend that teachers and administrators review the information presented there to determine the best way to meet the needs of particular students or classes.

Geography: A Comprehensive Study
By Michael Stokrp. Posted from the Curriculum Department.
Educational Options has added another new geography course to its social studies curriculum. Geography: A Comprehensive Study is a full credit offering that builds upon Geography: An Introduction, which was released during the 2008 term. The comprehensive study expands the lessons in the introductory course with case studies focusing on specific (and current) geography issues around the globe. Like the half-credit introduction, this newest geography course also includes a number of interactive maps as well as animations that enhance student understanding. We encourage teachers and administrators to discontinue enrolling students in Geography v.1 as its successors, Geography: An Introduction and Geography: A Comprehensive Study have a closer alignment to state standards, along with increased rigor and high-interest content. The requirements of each school or district will determine to which of the two courses students should be assigned.

Physical Science v2
By Michael Stokrp. Posted from the Curriculum Department.
Physical Science v2 is now available online. The new edition eliminates the need for a separate textbook and provides numerous improvements over version one. In addition to units on physics and chemistry, the natural sciences that deal with non-living energy and matter, Version two extends the study of inanimate matter to topics in astronomy and geology and broadens the student’s understanding of the states of matter by applying them to weather and atmosphere.
Each lesson concludes with a real world application of the lesson content so that students will come away from their study able to explain how that aspect of physical science affects their lives or the world about them. Many lessons provide a Try This side-bar section, with hands-on application of the content. There are also labs that guide the student through an activity illustrating key concepts. Because we at Educational Options are confident that students will benefit greatly from these new features and from the closer alignment to state standards, we recommend that schools discontinue the use of Physical Science v.1 and enroll all new students Physical Science v.2.

Geography: An Introduction
By Michael Stokrp. Posted from the Curriculum Department.
Educational Options is pleased to announce that our current geography course is being replaced with two new versions. The first, online today, is a semester (half credit) course that introduces students to basic geographic terms and regions of the world. Within each region, the student will examine various aspects of physical and human geography. Special attention will be paid to understanding how the different regions interact in an increasingly global world. Practice exercises provide opportunities for students to apply these concepts to real life scenarios. A second, full-credit course will be released at the start of 2008. This version will employ the content of the semester course but will offer greater depth. Additional lessons about the various regions of the world will be included. These will focus on specific current issues and developments within the regions and will assist students in developing an understanding of global concerns and the relevance of these issues to their lives. The current course will be labeled as version one (V.1). Because of the scarcity of the print atlas on which Geography (V.1) was built and the vast improvements to be found in the new course Geography – An Introduction, we encourage schools and teachers to enroll all new students in that one, when appropriate. The new courses provide a series of maps throughout the lessons and submissions that are necessary to understand numerous aspects of the region being studied. To best view these maps, teachers and students will need Adobe Flash Player 6 or above installed on their computers. If Flash is not available, there is a link in each map pop-up that will display a non-interactive version of the map.
